Salmonella Tomato Poisoning

The first poisonings began in April according to the data I heard on the news tonight. The US FDA says that the bulk of tomatoes sold in the US during April and May come from Florida and Mexico, yet they still do not know where the outbreak originated as of this date of June 13th. It seems there is no tracking method to make it easier for them to do their job.

I don’t know about in the US but here in Canada we have these little stickers on our individual fruit for the connivance of the stores in identifying the product brand so they will charge the correct price. I think it would be a good idea to require all single fruits and vegetables to have those stickers, and for those stickers to also identify the original source supplier of the product. Bagged products can have the data too if they don’t already. I think this would make tracking any outbreaks of salmonella and other bacteria back to their source a lot easier. In my opinion it is an inexpensive and simple solution that the politicians can require be done to help in protecting our food sources and it can be expanded beyond just fruit and vegetables.

This is just another thought from this poet fellow who likes to offer up solutions to try to make our world just a little bit better.

Just to block one of the excuses of the excuse makers who are always looking for excuses instead of solutions, I now offer up the fact that we have the technology to put a lot of data on small sources and the equipment to read that data as well. And please don’t whine that it will cost the poor farmer too much because that is just another phony excuse to do nothing as I am quite sure the people would be willing to pay the cost increase that will probably be in the neighbourhood of as much as 1/10th of a cent per item to know their food supply is safer.

If you think this is a good idea please get involved and communicate it to your politicians so it might be considered and hopefully acted upon, after all it’s your family’s health that is at stake.
